At Hollywood, all teachers follow the “Talk For Writing” approach to the explicit instruction of writing across the different genres. This is a research-based program which initiated in the UK to engage students and show them that writing can be exciting through providing them with hands-on experiences. Research shows that many students may have wonderful ideas, but struggle to get their thoughts onto the page. Even those who read reasonably well can experience difficulty with written expression.

The Talk For Writing process is an approach to teaching which uses spoken activities to develop writing skills. Quality writing is created by first expanding and developing students’ oral language skills and then teaching the necessary steps for exceptional sentence, paragraph and text construction. Students have the opportunity to “draw out” and “act out” texts using props, costumes and visual aids which engage all of the different learning styles. At Hollywood, we have seen the Talk For Writing method dramatically improve students’ writing. The approach also offers students with learning and language difficulties an opportunity to develop stronger writing skills.
