Our Early Learning Philosophy

At Hollywood PS, we value purposeful play, allowing children to apply a new skill or knowledge in a hands on, play based environment.

We believe play involves all aspects of the curriculum, and is active and creative, avoiding worksheets and cloned expectations.

It is child initiated, and is owned by the child and not the adult.

Play not only allows children to apply their knowledge and skills, but also assists children in developing their social skills, and oral language skills.

The staff at Hollywood PS promote and facilitate high quality teaching through the balance of child-directed activities and explicit teaching.

A balanced, evidence-based approach of intentional, guided and child-centred play is planned to ensure children have opportunities to grow.

Walker Learning

In the Early Childhood Centre at Hollywood, we embed the Walker Learning approach in conjunction with the explicit teaching of Literacy and Numeracy skills.

Walker Learning is Australia‘s first major play and project-based holistic pedagogy. It is internationally acclaimed and has been implemented for over 20 years across Australia, New Zealand and Asia. It is an intentional teaching and learning approach for children in their early childhood and primary years.

The Walker Learning Approach is not an inquiry model or program that is separated from other curriculum areas. Instead, is a total approach teaching and learning tool that provides a unique balance between the children being active participants in their learning and explicit instruction.

Walker Learning provides systems and practices that hold together teams of early childhood educators and teachers in a consistent approach that ensures continuity and predictability for children, educators and families.
